The SJC87 Initiative's Remote English Language Learning Program is a project designed to support the children at Karuna Nilayam and Sivan Illam children’s home in Sri Lanka through weekly English lessons via Skype.
Each week, on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, volunteer teachers from Sydney take turns to conduct English lessons via Skype with the children. The initiative has received positive feedback from both the volunteers and staff at the children’s home.
A volunteer teacher’s account of her experience:
“I had a great session with the kids at Karuna Nilayam tonight. We read the fairy tale "The Golden Goose" together. Some of them did a really good job. They can read really well and do almost no mistakes at the pronunciation while reading. They understand really well what they have read. It was really nice to see. That they were sitting with there exercise books and wrote down what they had learned during the session. I love working with the kids and can't wait to continue next week.” - Stephanie.
The SJC7 Initiative would like to thank Merrylands Tamil Church for sponsoring the program.
